Any-who, this originally started out as a Top 10 post, however, I asked my lovely friends for some suggestions.Which had a plentiful response and now I cannot narrow it down. All of these songs are classics and amazing in their own way and really set the mood for Valentine's Day whether you have a significant other or will be cuddling with your cat.
NOTE: This is really not in any particular order. I am not a professional music critic. These are just my opinions.
20. Oasis - Wonderwall
"I don't believe that anybody feels
The way I do about you now"
An excellent example of Britpop at one of it's finest moment. It is an instant classic of the 1990s peaking number 1 on Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Spain, and US Alternative music charts. This song is globally known and how can you not wish Liam Gallagher's nasally voice is singing to you? Of course you want 'to be the one that saves him.'
19. The Outfield - Your Love
"I just wanna use your love tonight
I don't wanna lose your love tonight"
The Outfield didn't make much global success with this song but it did reach the USA Billboard Hot 100 at #6. Also it has been covered countless of times in all types of genres such as ska's Less Than Jake and a reggae mix by Wyclef Jean. This mid 1980s song deserves to be on this list because no one wants to 'lose their love tonight."
18. Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply
"I'll be your dream
I'll be your wish I'll be your fantasy
I'll be your hope I'll be your love
Be everything that you need
I'll love you more with every breath"
Please excuse me while I squeal in a corner wishing this song was written for me. Still squealing. The lyrics are just so incredible! He's so in love and has made countless of women in love with him and countless of boyfriends hate him for it. This song has been used in proposals and weddings and is such a perfect love song. It hit the charts and Cascada covered it which up'd the amazingness of this song.
17. REO Speedwagon - Can't Fight This Feeling
"My life has been such a whirlwind since I saw you
I've been running round in circles in my mind
And it always seems that I'm following you, girl"
This song has been featured in multiple soundtracks, including Waiting... and Not Another Teen Movie. It also remained #1 on U.S. Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks, which is a big deal. But there's no wonder it reached that point because there is not a person in the world who cannot relate to falling for a friend.
16. Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me)
"Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby
Don't You Forget About Me"
The Breakfast Club anthem. It had to make the list of top love songs. They found companionship, friendship, and love in detention. Plus when you're in a relationship and there's a possibility it could end you don't want that person to forget about you. Here's to hoping that your love doesn't come to an end.
15. Frankie Valli - Can't Take my Eyes Off You
"You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off of you"
This 1967 single is a classic and a staple love song for romantic movies, commercials, hallmark cards, anything and everything corny. But it's a good thing. My grandfather loved this song and many other people have too. It's also relatable and I would swoon if someone quoted this song to me.
14. Modern English - I Melt With You
"I'll stop the world and melt with you
You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you"
I could dance to this song for 48 hours without stopping. I could never get tired of this upbeat, joyful song. It's one of those songs that just makes you happy when it starts playing. I just want to fall in love, dance around with that love, while singing this song. I don't care if VH1 counts it as a one hit wonder. It is an amazing hit.
13. Counting Crows - Accidentally In Love
"Well baby I surrender
To the strawberry ice cream
Never ever end of all this love
Well I didn't mean to do it
But there's no escaping your love"
He says "I'm in love" at the end!! Squeal. Die. Embarrassing story: I read this band fan fiction when I was a preteen and it was titled after this song and that's how I learned of it's existence and I would listen to it constantly. It was on Shrek. The music video is so interesting and cute. This song is love. Everything. It is definitely another song that makes you want to get up and dance around in your underwear in being in love bliss.
12. The Turtles - Happy Together
"Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it has to be"
This song has a dreamlike, enchanting way about it. Fun fact it knocked the Beatles off of #1 on Billboards Hot 100 for three weeks. It also has been featured on multiple television shows and covered by a crazy range of artists. It is a classic love song. Furthermore, their name is The Turtles, who doesn't love turtles?!
11. The Cure - Lovesong
"However far away
I will always love you"
This song makes hearts melt. No matter what he'll always love that person. Excuse that puddle on the floor that is my melted heart. It's so pretty but only seen moderate success to others only charting at #59 on Billboards Hot 100.
